New World & New Words
Let's talk a little bit about technology. It is becoming harder to say that internet is a new thing. It started in 1974 with ARPANET and evolved to Internet after some years. Time has passed and it still evolving and creating new trends and new doubts about specific terms. In this brief post I will explain a little bit about Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Big Data and Smart Data.
What is Cloud Computing?
"cloud computing is the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer." - Google
Chromebook from Google is the best example nowadays. It uses the cloud to syncronize all your data, documents, favorites sites and places and much more. The best feature about it is that all you have will always be available does not matter where you are. The second best aspect in this technology is the fact that you can let server computers process all data necessary to run a program so you will not need state of art machines to play games or process videos for example.
What is internet of Things?
"Internet of things is a proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data." - Google
I will just endorse what Google said. We have been seeing a lot of new gadgets connected to internet and it, of course, helps to expand cloud computing systems. Android Wear is a good example because is a new type of watch that is now connected to the smartphone and, because of that, connected to the internet too. We will see in the future much more equipments connected to the internet like video games, televisions or even refrigerators.
What is Big Data?
"Big data is an evolving term that describes any voluminous amount of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data that has the potential to be mined for information."
It has four main aspects: data volume, data velocity, data veracity and data value.Data volume and velocity are associeated with how fast the data is created. Veracity and value is associated with what is really stored in this data. How can you use it to perform an advertisement campaign or to deal better with customers.
The problem about big data is the amount of data created per day and how can you find some meaning inside it once that it is also full of noise.
What is Smart Data?
"Smart Data is data which has useful semantics associated with it" - Quora
Do the evolution they say, it will be fun they say. This is a really new term so here I will be saying a little more about what I think that it is. Once you have a lot of data you can or store it and try to find something useful inside it OR you can process it using an algorithim to associate data and find useful information. This is a really new trend and is a much more reasonable choice than big data once you does not need lots and lots of data to get good results.
The best explanation I find so fair is:
"The main objective is to move from data management organisation culture (struggling to manage all kinds of data) to learning organisation culture (leveraging all the value behind the data)." - Information Age
