5 Reasons why tablets sales are starting to drop
In the last quarter of 2014 research firms claimed that tablets sales started to drop. This was also noticed in Brazil in the first quarter of 2015. This is probably a signal that this kind of device needs to be reinvented or modified to follow new market needs. Before making any other assumptions I will present the 5 main reasons below:
1 - Dollar price is too high in Brazil & lack of motivation
Recently dollar price in Brazil reached R$ 4,20. This is really affecting the price of all goods inclusive technology. Also tablets are not attracting too much consumers anymore. Smartphones with bigger screens or Phablets as they are being called are replacing Tablets in the marketing. This is due to the fact they are more portable.
2 - Doesn't matter who you are
shipments fell from 5.8m to 1.7m units year-on-year – a 4.1m drop in a quarter when the company estimated that the overall market was down by just 2.5m units.
3 - Users are old or very young
Data from Pew Research group reported that users are in general or older than 65 years or younger than 29 years and they are not willing to upgrade their devices any time soon.
4 - Tablets are here to stay (And not to be upgrated)
As I said before the Tablet users are not planning to buy any other Tablets once they are happy with what they have. This shows that Tablets life cycle is increasing to be similar to TV's: around 5 years.
Also access to internet using tablets is not dropping, data from Fiksu proves that they are being used normally. Another interesting feature is that tablets were made to be shared in opposite to smartphones that are really personal. A family composed with 4 people will have 4 smartphones and just one Tablet in general.
5 - Laptops are fighting for their space
Pagers were killed by Cellphones. Cellphones were killed by Smartphones. Fax phones were killed by e-mail. Netbooks were killed by Tablets. Desktop were killed by Laptops. And now... what will kill Tablets? Data in Brazil shows that sales of computers with Detachable screens increased 115%. This will be probably the reborn of laptops.
In some years we will know what will happen!
How about you? What is your opinion? What will come next?
Update:
Microsoft is doing exactly what I said: it is working on hybrid computers, Laptops with Detachable Screens. Read the complete article at Business Insider.
